February 7, 2023 – Jenn Stewart – My Plein Air Journey

National League of American Pen Women Central Ohio Branch

Jenn Stewart will be doing a Zoom presentation on her journey over the last nine years with plein air painting.  She’ll cover how she began with signing up for a week long plein air workshop to break a 20-year “artist’s block.”  She’ll walk us through what she has learned and show us her process for picking a scene and simplifying it into a complete painting in about two hours of painting time.

Biography:

Jenn Stewart was born in Columbus Ohio, and had the good fortune to spent her first twenty summers on an island off the coast of Maine, sailing, hiking and being totally immersed in the wild part of downeast Maine.  This love of the coast inspired her to start painting landscapes at an early age.

Jenn earned a BFA in painting from Wittenberg University in 1991.  Having taken workshops with Stan Moleller on Monhegan and Tim Horn in Ohio, she works both en Plein Air, and in the studio.  Her work explores light and shadow across a range of subject matter from inner city, to Ohio farms and her beloved Monhegan and the Maine Coast.  Annual trips for a week of painting on Monhegan renew her love of the ocean and keep her inspired.  She strives to evoke a strong sense of place and an emotional response in the viewer.

She regularly participates in plein air events and has received numerous awards in Plein air competitions and juried shows.  Jenn is currently serving as Vice President of The Ohio Plein Air Society and is active with the Central Ohio Plein Air Painters.  Jenn has been represented by Hayley Gallery in New Albany since November 2020.

When:

  • Tuesday, February 7, 2023 • 7:00–9:00p

March 14, 2023 – Sandra K-Horn – My Self-Publishing Journey

National League of American Pen Women Central Ohio Branch

A Path to Becoming an Indie Author and My Muses

My self-publishing journey was a learning experience. Self-publishing has improved in the last twenty years, but it is not a new activity. Walt Whitman, Margret Atwood, Beatrix Potter, and Mark Twain are just a few self-published authors. But a decision to do so takes some research. All three of my recent works are self-published.

More young people know more about drugs than most adults. One in five teens have abused prescription drugs, and 21% of high school seniors use marijuana. In Sept 2021, counterfeit pills with fentanyl seized by the administration had increased by 430% since 2019. According to the CDC, fentanyl deaths have tripled over the last two years. The knowledge about teens and young adults inspired Downward Spiral. Its publishing has created conversation among adults and their children.

Biography:

Sandra K-Horn has worked in politics, education, and broadcast media. Her first novel, The Rabbit Trap, was awarded an honorable mention by Edward Hoffer Award in 2007. More magazine published her article “Ziplining in Costa Rica” in 2008. In 2019, K-Horn updated The Rabbit Trap and renamed it Downward Spiral. After the Tears Dry, a contemporary women’s fiction was published in 2022. Her nonfiction Undercover; Becoming Street Smart in Central Ohio will be published in Fall 2022. She lives in Columbus, Ohio.

When:

  • Tuesday, March 14, 2023 • 1:00–3:00p

Where:

  • Main Branch – Columbus Metropolitan Library
    96 S. Grant Ave., Columbus, OH 43215
